Baby Sleep Questions Answered
Expert answers to the most common questions parents have about how to help a baby sleep.
Everything Parents Ask About Baby Sleep
We have answered the most common questions parents ask about baby and toddler sleep โ from newborn schedules to sleep training, night wakings to nap transitions. If your question is not here, explore our full sleep guides.
Why does my baby wake up every hour at night?
Waking every hour is usually caused by a sleep association โ the baby needs the same conditions to fall back asleep that were present when they first fell asleep. If they fell asleep feeding, being rocked, or with a dummy, they will wake and need that same thing at the end of every sleep cycle (roughly every 45โ60 minutes). The solution is gradually teaching the baby to self-settle at the start of sleep.
What is the 4 month sleep regression?
The 4 month sleep regression is a permanent change in how babies sleep. Around 3.5โ5 months, the brain matures and sleep architecture shifts from two stages to four โ the same adult pattern. This causes more frequent waking between cycles. Unlike other regressions, it does not go away on its own. Building independent sleep skills is the long-term solution.
When do babies sleep through the night?
Most babies can sleep a 6โ8 hour stretch by 4โ6 months if they have developed some self-settling ability. "Sleeping through" a full 10โ12 hours without waking is more common from 6โ9 months. Some babies do it earlier, some later โ it depends heavily on feeding, development, and whether independent sleep skills have been established.
Is white noise safe for babies?
Yes, when used correctly. Keep the volume at or below 65 decibels, place the speaker at least 7 feet from the baby, and never put a phone inside the crib. White noise at a safe volume all night is more effective than using a timer, and there is no evidence of harm to developing hearing at appropriate volumes.
How do I stop my baby waking at 5am?
Early waking is usually caused by one of three things: too-early bedtime (counterintuitively, moving bedtime later by 15 minutes can help), light entering the room (blackout blinds make a significant difference), or the final sleep cycle ending at a natural light-sleep point. White noise can help bridge this last cycle. Try one change at a time for a week before trying another.
What is the best sleep training method?
There is no single best method โ the right approach depends on your baby's temperament and your own comfort level. Cry it out (extinction) is the fastest but hardest emotionally. Ferber (graduated extinction) is a middle ground. Chair method and pick-up-put-down are gentler but slower. All methods are safe and effective when applied consistently.
How do I use Lullaby Land?
Lullaby Land is completely free โ no sign-up needed. Visit the Sounds page for white noise and lullabies, Videos for curated YouTube lullabies, Stories for bedtime stories, Routine for a personalised bedtime plan, and Tracker to log your baby's sleep. All tools work on phone and desktop.
How do I get my baby to sleep without being held?
Start by making the transition gradual. If the baby currently needs to be fully asleep in your arms before transfer, try putting them down drowsy but not fully asleep. Over several nights, gradually reduce how drowsy they are at transfer. Use a warm swaddle or sleep sack, white noise, and a firm but gentle hand on their chest for reassurance. It takes consistency over 1โ2 weeks but most babies adapt well.
Does Lullaby Land work offline?
Yes โ once you have visited the site, it is cached as a Progressive Web App and all sounds, tools, and pages work without an internet connection. This is particularly useful during travel or in areas with unreliable WiFi. You can also install Lullaby Land on your phone's home screen for instant access.
What room temperature is best for baby sleep?
The ideal room temperature for baby sleep is between 16โ20ยฐC (61โ68ยฐF). This range reduces the risk of overheating, which is a known risk factor for SIDS. Dress your baby in one layer more than you would wear yourself, and check warmth by feeling the back of their neck or chest rather than hands and feet, which are naturally cooler.
My baby slept well and now suddenly wakes all night โ what happened?
A sudden change in sleep after a period of good sleep is almost always a developmental sleep regression or a growth spurt. Common ages are 4 months, 6 months, 8โ10 months, 12 months, and 18 months. These typically last 2โ6 weeks. Maintain your routine, add white noise, and avoid introducing new sleep associations like feeding to sleep that you will later need to remove. The regression will pass.
