By age 2โ4, most children are sleeping 10โ13 hours total. The big challenges are dropping the afternoon nap (usually 2.5โ3.5 years), moving to a big bed, managing nightmares and fears, and the classic "curtain call" bedtime delaying tactics.
When to Drop the Nap
Most children are ready between 2.5 and 3.5 years. Signs: taking 45+ minutes to fall asleep at nap time, napping fine but then unable to sleep until 9โ10pm. Introduce "quiet time" (books, puzzles, audio stories) in place of nap โ many children will still fall asleep during this, and that's fine.
The Crib-to-Bed Transition
Aim to keep toddlers in a crib until age 3 if possible. When moving, keep everything else identical โ same white noise, same routine, same room layout. Install a bed rail to prevent rolling out. Expect 1โ2 weeks of testing new freedoms.
Nightmares & Night Fears
- Nightmares peak at 3โ4 years as imagination develops โ this is developmentally normal
- Keep a small nightlight (red wavelength is best for melatonin)
- Validate fears without reinforcing them: "I understand you feel scared. You are safe."
- Avoid scary content in the 2 hours before bed
