Newborns sleep 14–17 hours per day but rarely more than 2–3 hours at a stretch — this is completely normal. Their sleep cycles are short and their stomachs are tiny. The goal at this stage is not "sleeping through the night" — it's safe sleep and maximising total sleep.
What Works for Newborns
- White noise — mimics the womb (85dB inside the womb). Use rain, womb sound or fan at 60–65dB all night.
- Swaddling — suppresses the Moro (startle) reflex that wakes newborns. Always keep hips loose.
- Drowsy but awake — start practising this from week 3 onwards.
- Darkened room — newborns have no circadian rhythm yet, but darkness helps.
Safe Sleep Rules (AAP 2025)
- Always place on their back on a firm flat surface
- Nothing in the crib — no pillows, bumpers, blankets or toys
- Room-share (not bed-share) for the first 6 months
- Keep room at 68–72°F / 20–22°C
